Edinson Cavani Scores 31st League Goal to Help PSG Win against Montpelier

Edinson Cavani scored the goals that helped Paris St Germain stay in touch with Monaco at the top of the French Ligue 1 table.

It has been a difficult campaign for the French club, as they have been facing several disappointments under the regime of Unai Emery. The former Sevilla manager was brought with the sole objective of helping the club Excel in European competitions. Yet, PSG face to the embarrassment of losing a 4-0 lead from the first leg to Barcelona, as they went out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage is once again.

In the last few years, the French league title has provided solace to the club. Even that now seems in doubt with Monaco rated as the favourites to win the league title. Yet, that has not prevented PSG from giving the best in order to stay in touch with the table leaders. A 2-0 win over Montpelier helped them remain level on points with Monaco, who are in the table due to a better goal difference.

Edinson Cavani scored the opening goal before former Manchester United winger Angel di Maria doubled their advantage and made the game safe. After the match, PSG defender Maxwell claimed that they can only do their job and keep on winning while hoping for Monaco to drop points.

“We'll see if we can stay in front until the end. Monaco's had a great season and you have to congratulate them. But we're still in it,” said Maxwell. The goal against Montpelier has helped Edinson Cavani register his best season’s tally of 31 goals. In the past, he has been overshadowed by the presence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but the Uruguayan is clearly benefiting from the lack of the Swedish centre forward. Cavani has been the first choice striker for the club this season.
